  Laurent Schkolnyk

Laurent Schkolnyk trained in both medicine and fine art, studying at the Beaux Art School I Nantes. He apprenticed with the renowned mezzotint artist Yozo Hamagucho. Working both in black and white and with three plate color prints, Schkolnyk uses 17th century mezzotint printmaking methods for his own work. His ability to illuminate the subject matter from within allows him to create fanciful still-lifes that unleash small worlds whirling inside a teacup or slipping from the curves of a vase. In contrast, his black and white prints create clear division of energy between object and environment. They are edgy, often unsettling and hold a kinetic potential. Each of his works seems a small miracle when measured against the laborious and meticulous demands of mezzotint. Schkolynk's mezzotints are included in the collections of the County Museum of Los Angeles, The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the National Library of Paris.
