  James Strombotne

James Strombotne’s paintings mirror a subjective reality, not an objective one. The artist uses color not only to formally balance the underlying abstract composition, but to affirm a mood and establish a setting for his imagery. His paintings exhibit a strong underlying abstract composition, unique brushwork and color, and retain a fascination with the human figure. His figures are often highly linear and stylized. They exhibit the fluidity of line and assured confidence that only matures after years of line drawing.

Strombotne’s career began in the 1950’s when he received a bachelor’s degree from Pomona College in 1956 and a M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate School in 1959. He has taught painting at University of CA Riverside for over 30 years influencing generations of young painters. While still a student, he received an ART IN AMERICA “New Talent Award” and in 1962-63 he was granted a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art acquired his paintings.
